The Power of Storytelling

Within each of us lies a story waiting to be shared. Over the ages, people have preserved their stories through oral traditions, passed down within sacred cultures that safeguard their integrity and meaning. Indigenous and religious communities have long relied on these methods, using poetic literature, songs, and eventually adopting written records such as scrolls and printed books to document their narratives.

In today’s world, stories can be communicated in numerous ways—through movement, social media channels, and print media. The manner in which a story is told is now as distinctive as the story itself. Sometimes, a person’s story feels like a bird ready for flight, eager to be released. Yet, articulating what you wish to share and deciding how to do so can be challenging; this is where dna stories comes into play—a project designed to breathe life into stories.

Stories take many different forms: poetic literature, journal writing, songwriting, novels, and memoirs. Each form offers a unique way for individuals to express themselves and capture their experiences.

Poetic Literature

Poetic literature itself comes in diverse genres. Poetry can be rhythmic or take the form of limericks or psalms. My personal preference is psalm writing, and I have included many of these in my book, Soul Psalms. These are, in essence, prayers that chronicle my spiritual journey. I am eager to explore how this poetic literature could serve as a storytelling vehicle for you as well.

Journal Writing

Journal writing is a deeply personal art, typically capturing your emotions and thoughts regularly. I kept my own journals, but when my children were transitioning into adulthood, I maintained journals filled with daily reflections for them to ponder. At the end of the year, I gave these journals to them as keepsakes from a father who loves them dearly. This could be a meaningful approach for you to consider when telling your own story.

Songwriting

Songwriting is among the oldest storytelling traditions. Much of the wisdom literature in the Jewish psalms, and the songlines of Indigenous cultures, are simply stories set to music. Thanks to modern technology, you no longer need to be a musician to bring your lyrics to life. Astro Songs is a collection of my words transformed into music—most originating from my psalm writing, though occasionally I create songs from standalone lyrics using creative music curation techniques. You can access these through this website.

Novel Writing

Writing a novel can be inspired by your own experiences or serve as a way to communicate an important idea. It might also be something you have always wanted to pursue but never found the time or encouragement to start. The Key is an ebook I developed purely for personal satisfaction. Whether or not it reaches a broader audience, it expresses my thoughts on navigating life’s complexities and the importance of hope, forgiveness, and grace.

Memoir

Memoir writing is perhaps the most personal storytelling form. Telling your story creatively can be a truly exciting journey, as it can incorporate a variety of elements—including short stories, songs, poems, and especially images. Memoirs can be recorded as printed books, flipbooks, or even short or long films. The resources on my website may be useful in telling your story.
